Thompson John B. "Language and Ideology". The theory of ideology is now the object of renewed interest, both because of a current criticizing the traditional marxist approach and because of a line of thinking that gives back language a central part in social life. But criticizing the traditional approach to ideology should not lead one to drop the notion, nor to deny it its critical value. The author suggests a new definition of ideology, that which in the use of language supports domination relationships. After rejecting three "misleading" conceptions (discretes systems of belief, social cement, and pure illusion) of ideology, he shows what uptaking such a definition implies for social-historical, formal or discursive, and narrative approaches. His conclusion is to show how a hermeneutic component, for interpretation and justification, is indispensable for the study of ideology.La théorie de l'idéologie est l'objet d'un regain d'intérêt, tant du fait de l'existence d'un courant critique du marxisme traditionnel que d'un courant de pensée qui redonne au langage une place centrale dans la vie sociale. La critique de l'approche traditionnelle de l'idéologie ne doit cependant pas conduire à abandonner la notion, ni à lui retirer sa valence critique. L'auteur propose de définir l'idéologie comme ce qui, dans l'usage du langage, soutient les rapports de domination. Après avoir rejeté trois conceptions "fallacieuses" de l'idéologie (système discret de croyances, ciment social et pure illusion), il montre ce qu'une telle définition implique à l'égard des approches socio-historique, formelle ou discursive, et narrative.
