Varro Gabrielle, "A monograph of seven French-speaking individuals in the FRG". How do individuals experience their migration ? A view from below gives us a glimpse inside a small group of French-speaking friends living in Cologne (Germany). We look at their itineraries, occupations and plans for the future, their privileged foreigner status and their language use, in connection with their personal integration into the new milieu. Their bilingualism has the result of making these young Europeans, as yet still economically marginal, into a cultural elite. Their situation is in total contrast with that of people falling into the "migrant" category, because their linguistic identities (French, German), along with a respected foreigner statua, are factors of social integration.L'approche micro-sociologique d'un petit groupe de Francophones (quatre Français, deux Algéro-Allemandes) résidant à Cologne, permet d'entrevoir comment des gens vivent leurs migrations individuelles. L'examen de leurs trajectoires, leurs activités et projets, leurs statuts d'étrangers privilégiés et leurs pratiques langagières, met en évidence leurs stratégies d'insertion dans le pays d'accueil. Le bilinguisme a un effet original, celui de constituer en "élite" de jeunes Européens dont le statut économique reste précaire. Leur situation est contrastée avec celle des «migrants» : leur spécificité langagière, liée à un statut étranger valorisé, est un facteur d'intégration et non d'exclusion sociale.Varro Gabrielle.
