In attempting to understand the specific mode of water distribution in the presaharian oases during the Roman era, as from the disparate archeological data and the rare ancient documents, it has been necessary to investigate examples where the traditional system was valid up to a recent past. The case of Tozeur where the sharing of water attributed to Ibn Chabbath may be considered as referential, exhibits a modulated breakdown of flow through a regular set of dams (khachba), followed by set shared periods of watering time along the terminal feeder-channels.
