Maruyama Masao is one of the most important historians of political thought and intellectuals of postwar Japan. This article focuses on how he understands modernity and how, in particular, he links it to the question of the subject. Maruyama, who first studied Edo period confucianist thought at Tokyo Imperial University, became actively interested in numerous contemporary problems after the war. In analyzing the psychological profile of the political and military leaders during the war, he attracted attention in developing his idea of "system of irresponsabilty".
