This paper presents the main four theoretical approaches that have led research on the so-called Japanese traditional family over the past century. Theoretical debates focused on deciding if the ie was, essentially, an association grounded on economical rationality and dientelistic relationships, or a patriarchal kinship group, or a corporate group embedded in the political economy of the villages or, lastly, a domestic group of parents identical to the stem family in its developmental cycle. Each of these theoretical constructs is sustained by plenty of historical documents and indisputable evidences.
