Le roman du sarcophage dit de « Saint-Guilhem-Guillaume d'Orange», à Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert (Hérault)

The writer after reexamining thoroughly the study of the sarcophagus and the testimonies about it, concludes that it was made during the IVth century but adapted to the fashion during the Xlllth century (past 1200-1220) : work fully antique but simultaneously romanesque for its two thirds. It may have housed the saint Guilhem's remains but this fact is not attested. It is a very important document for the study of antic inspiration in the Xlllth century and it seaks for comparisons with monumental sculpture especially with the one of Saint-Gilles.En reprenant de façon détaillée l'étude du sarcophage et de tous les témoignages le concernant, l'auteur parvient à la conclusion qu'il remonte au IVe siècle de notre ère mais a été remis «au goût du jour» au XIIIe siècle (après 1200-1220) : «œuvre totalement antique, en même temps qu'aux deux tiers romane». Il est possible, mais non prouvé, qu'il ait recueilli les restes de saint Guilhem. Il constitue un document important pour l'étude de l'inspiration antique au XllIe siècle et appelle des comparaisons avec la sculpture monumentale, notamment avec celle de Saint-Gilles.Maillard-Rillet Isabelle.
