Un lot de verres du Ier siècle provenant du port de Narbonne (Aude) (sondages 1990-1992)

The silt bottom of the water of the ancient port of Narbonne yielded these past years significant objects linked to the sea trade particularly flourishing at the beginning of the Principate. According to the current information, pieces of glass excavated from 1990 till 1992 are a homogenous set from the time of the first decades of the first century until the years 55-60 for the latest. The 94 vases of this set, often kept in a noteworthy state of preservation (though never perfect) are together with a few fragments of raw glass which might have been samples for a next delivery. Located near the ancient shore, the deposit could correspond to a place for transhipping : when the goods were being handled their quality was checked at the time they were conveyed in transit through the port of Narbo Martius. In this interpretation, theses pieces of glass must be considered as second items of one or several loadings probably sent from Italy for the Gallic market before the beginning of a local production able to compete with such imports.Les fonds envasés du port antique de Narbonne ont livré, ces dernières années, un très abondant mobilier lié au trafic maritime particulièrement actif au début du principat. Dans la documentation disponible à ce jour, les verres apparus de 1990 à 1992 forment un ensemble homogène couvrant les premières décennies du Ier s. jusque vers les années 55/60 au plus tard. Les 94 vases de ce lot, souvent dans un état de conservation remarquable (quoique jamais intacts), sont accompagnés de quelques éclats de verre brut qui peuvent avoir servi d'échantillons pour une livraison ultérieure. Situé à quelque distance du rivage antique, le gisement peut correspondre à un point de transbordement : à l'occasion de cette manipulation, on aura vérifié la qualité de la marchandise transitant par le port de Narbo Martius. Ces verres sont donc interprétés ici comme les rebuts d'une ou de plusieurs cargaisons, probablement expédiées d'Italie pour satisfaire le marché gaulois avant le début d'une production régionale pouvant concurrencer de telles importations.Feugère Michel.
