Iberian ceramics found in southern Gaul can be divided into two groups. The first, produced locally as early as the 6th and 5th centuries B.C., are known as Ibero-Languedoc; the second, series of sombrero de copa and plates, were imported from Catalonia during the 2nd and lst centuries B.C.. Major collections like the Ruscino contain details of shape and decoration which are indicative of changes in production methods used in the ceramics workshops of New Catalonia from the early 2nd century B.C. onwards. Their presence is related to the Roman conquest of the Iberian Peninsula, and especially, to the proximity of Tarragon, capital of the Spanish metropole, which probably played an important role in the diffusion of local ceramics in southe...
