This paper focuses on the forms, uses and meanings of the moji-e ~%3r%à (pictures made from characters) during the Edo period (1603-1868), as seen through one of the most common themes : the Seven Gods of Fortune (Shichifukujin -t ; } !}$). It attempts in particular to show how the use of this playful technique in the representation of religious figures sheds new light on the notion of playfulness and on the different functions of moji-e.
