Compared to others Japanese medieval periods, the Tokugawa shogunate proves completely different in the matter of politics concerning money. Japanese State-produced coins existed in Ancient Japan until Xth Century but vanished with the coming of medieval times. Since then the warrior regime rather used to import chinese copper currency than producing its own regardless of the huge development of trade and exchanges that once might take place. The use of these imported copper coins from China lasted until Edo period at the beginning of seventeenth century.
