At the end of the Heian period, some learned aristocrats, acquainted with Mont. Hiei monks especially Genshin, the founder of the base of amidist doctrine in Japan, set out to create a new genre of religious literature. This new genre was the description of the lives of monks and laymen believers who were certain to have had a « good death » ; i.e. to have gone to the Pure Land of Amida to be reborn. Those texts, aimed at enlightening the masses, were considered practical complements to Genshin's doctrines. However, we cannot help wondering if they fulfilled their pions mission.
