Paulin, originally from Bordeaux, was a member of the Gallic senatorial aristocracy. He took part in the administration of the Empire by becoming consular of Campania, a province in which he had properties. After he had returned to Gaul, he led the life of a man who owned a large estate and married a rich Spanish matron named Therasia. But he gave up this lifestyle; he was baptised by the Bishop of Bordeaux and later ordained - against his will - to the priesthood in Barcelona. He decided to withdraw to Campania where he founded a monastic community in Nole before he was consecrated Bishop of that city.
