This paper investigates empirically the determinants of overtime working by using data from 15 West German industries. It turns out that the current level of production, but not the one expected for the next period has a strong impact on overtime hours. Furthermore, the rate of unemployment influences the use of overtime in most regarded cases negatively. However, there is no evidence in favor of an increased upward rigidity of overtime in times of high unemployment. In addition, effects of the composition of the workforce are considered
