With the collapse of the Lon Nol regime in April 1975 and the establishment of the Khmer Rouge regime, Cambodian intellectuals entered an awkward and terrifying adventure. They felt torn apart between an inflexible patriotism and a romantic vision of a Revolution supposed to outmatch all previous revolutionary experiences. Most of the Cambodian intellectuals trained abroad chose to return to their homeland in order to contribute to the rebuilding of a country devastated by war. They were called upon by some of the Cambodian leaders they trusted.
