International audienceUnderstanding and predicting the microclimate of shallow caves is a key issue for the conservation of parietal art. In order to determine the dominant mechanisms of heat transfer in a configuration close to that of painted caves, we performed numerical simulations of a parallelepiped cavity whose dimensions and depth are of the order of 10 m. This simple geometry allowed us to use a detailed model including turbulent natural convection, gas radiation, along with vapor transport and latent heat fluxes resulting from condensation and evaporation on the walls.Gas radiation increases the flow circulation in the cavity through wall–gas radiative exchanges and significantly modifies the wall radiative flux.
