A Fourier Domain Mode Locked (FDML) laser with active mode locking has been modeled and designed. A detailed simulation study revealed that a radio frequency tuning accuracy of better then1 MHz is required to achieve FDML operation. The amplifier current and the modulation depth of the tunable intracavity filter are linked, and reveal the presence of a FDML threshold current. Initial measurements of the tunable filter performance in a realized device have been made.</p
