The present invention relates to a method for preparing a branched non dendrimeric macromolecule, comprising: a) M providing an addition product of an a) olefinically unsaturated compound and an amine comprising at least two hydroxyl groups; and b) esterifying at least part of the hydroxyl groups of the addition product with an olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid, an olefinically unsaturated carboxylate anion or an olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid anhydride. The invention further relates to macromolecules obtainable by a method of the invention.<br/
