The influence of amorphorous Al(OH)3 on the hydration of 3CaO.SiO2 in portland cement was studied with an isothermal calorimeter. The reaction mechanism was investigated qual. by x-ray diffraction, D.T.A., ir, and electron microscope methods and the course of Ca(OH)2 concn. was followed quant. during the reaction by chem. methods. The hydration reaction is only slightly influenced by gibbsite and influenced to a larger extent by bayerite. In the presence of amorphorous Al(OH)3, the reaction of 3CaO.SiO2 with water yields 4 peaks, the latter of which are affected by the addn. of CaO.
