A formalism is presented for the comprehensible parameterization of geometrical mappings that encompasses both linear and nonlinear types. A stable numerical method is given for the computation of these mappings, and a method of including these mappings into existing modeling and rendering systems is discussed that offers features such as recursive detail refinement, detail instantiation and self similarity
