Beaches along the north-eastern coast of Jerba Island (Tunisia) are undergoing a severe marine erosion. Sand is carried by the longshore current towards the north-west; it nourrishes a typical recurved spit which is rapidly increasing (250 m in a decade). Natural causes account for this erosion which appears to have started after the Sixteenth Century. However, the recent development of tourism has considerably enhanced the phenomenon.
