According to the census carried on 5th April 1981, Greece de facto population amounts to 9 740 000 inhabitants. During the last ten years this country ascertained a relatively fast demographical growth (annual rate of 1,1 %), as a result of the decrease of overseas emigration and the return of a large part of greek workers settled in West Germany. Today 63 % of the population are living in urban settlements, the main metropolitan areas being those of Athens (3 336 000 inh.) and Salonica (706 000 inh.). One of the most significant phenomena is the increasing weight of medium size cities like Patras, Heraklion, Larissa and Volos, while Athens rate of growth has been reduced.
