Yugoslavia had 22 354 000 inhabitants according to the first results of the 31. 3. 1981 population census. When comparing the period between the two last censuses with the former ones, it appears that the growth of population is slowing down. This evolution occurs in all republics and autonomous provinces except Slovenia. The regional distribution of communes with an increasing or decreasing population remains relatively stable, but the growth rate of the major towns gets smaller, while it raises in periurban communes. Migrations within the country are stimulated both by the growth of employment and by very high differences between the regional rates of unemployment.
