The urban development of the valley of the river Arc (Aix-en-Provence bassin) and Huveaune valley (marseille basin) increases the dangerous consequences of heavy mediterranean rains. So in 1972, 1973 and chiefly in 1978, catastrophic floods ravaged the banks of these two rivers.
