The Egyptian population is wholly concentrated in the Nile Valley, the Delta and the canal zone that is 53 000 km2, or 5 7c of the country's area. The rural population, over twenty million persons at the census of 1976, remains the majority with 56 % of the whole population, but the number of city -dwellers, sixteen million, is increasing rapidly. This growth favours above all the cities with more than a hundred thousand inhabitants which countain nearly three quarters of the urban population.
