Incrustations of the Nîmes Roman aqueduct (France). Observations and hypotheses. In this study, carbonate deposits (incrustations), formed by precipitation of the CO3Ca in solution in the water which flowed in this Roman aqueduct, are considered as marks of palaeogeo graphie evolution. We offer a classification of different deposits as well as a lithostratigraphie study of incrustations found in the Sernhac tunnel. The large accumulations of carbonates on the outsides of the aqueduct are not the result of water overflow, but the consequence of illegal diversions of water.
