In south central Chile, families and Mapuche Indian communities have turned to tourism to diversify their subsistence agriculture. A cultural approach to their territories invigorates the analyses of tourism and of local development by placing it in the context of the needs of the indigenous population. It opens a perspective on tourist impacts from the point of view of Mapuche actors and logic.
