Epigraphic data on annona and the officials involved in it can be found in all regions of Italy. Most date back to the second half of the second century. Normally, the term annona is used for grain supplies, but, in some cases, its meaning must be broadened so as to include oil. Annona was performed in at least two different ways : either through buying grain and then distributing it — free or at a moderate price — to the town inhabitants, or through donating amounts of money to the city coffers on a special account : ratio frumentaria.
