Compensation and Sorting of the Workforce As Saint-Paul [2001] shows that workers with closed productivity levels tend to concentrate in same firms, we may question the selective function of compensation schemes. The theoretical model from Lazear [2000] stresses the existence of both incentive and selection effects of a payment scheme based on employees' performance. This model has been tested through different estimation methods and most of them support the theoretical predictions. This model furthermore has been extended to theoretical and empirical works supporting the hypothesis of workers' self-selection depending on their intrinsic characteristics such as risk aversion, intrinsic motivation or social preferences.
