In this thesis, we present a new theoretical framework for describing the electron dynamics induced when an atom or molecule is exposed to a strong low frequency laser field, focusing especially on strong field ionization. This process is at the heart of a wide variety of phenomena in the fast-developing field of attosecond science, and a good theoretical description is vital if we are to correctly interpret experimental results and understand the underlying physics. Obtaining such a description, however, poses a considerable challenge.
