Reinterpretation and contemporary use of the ancient clay building tradition in Sardinia

Der nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg begonnene Modernisierungsprozess in Gesamtitalien brachte einen Wandel der tradierten kulturellen und sozioökonomischen Strukturen mit sich. Auch Sardinien erlebte, wie nie zuvor in seiner Geschichte, eine radikale kulturelle und wirtschaftliche Veränderung. Insbesondere die traditionelle Lehmbauweise war hiervon betroffen, die von den industriell hergestellten Baustoffen wie z.B. Beton verdrängt wurde. Daraus resultierten ein rasches Wachstum der Bauindustrie und eine durch Spekulanten katalysierte urbane Ausdehnung, die das Erscheinungsbild vieler sardischer Dörfer nachhaltig beschädigte. Vor diesem Hintergrund stellt die aktuelle Wiederentdeckung von natürlichen Materialien und traditionellen Bautechniken eine nachhaltige Alternative zur bisherigen, teils fehlgeleiteten, Entwicklung der Architektur und Stadtplanung dar. Die vorliegende Forschungsarbeit befasst sich mit dem Hinterland von Cagliari, einem Gebiet, in dem beides präsent ist: Die alten Stadtlandschaften aus Lehm, Ausdruck des baukulturellen Erbes Sardiniens, und - hierzu im Kontrast - die zeitgenössische desolate und bedrückende Bauweise. Ziel der Arbeit ist es, die Möglichkeiten der Anwendung traditioneller Lehmbautechnik (sardisch: „ladiri“) auf Sardinien in der zeitgenössischen Architektursprache zu beleuchten. Das Verständnis der städtischen und geschichtlichen Aspekte, die mit dem Verlust der Lehmbautechnik eng zusammenhängen, sind Grundlage dieser Arbeit. Darauf aufbauend wurde untersucht, wie die Wiedereinführung des Baustoffs Lehm neue Perspektiven für das Hinterland von Cagliari aufzeigen kann. Die Möglichkeit der Wiedereinführung der Lehmbautechnik auf Sardinien wurde in der vorliegenden Arbeit auf drei Ebenen untersucht: Einer gesetzlichen, einer städtebaulichen und einer wirtschaftlichen.The modernisation process that began throughout Italy after the Second World War was accompanied by a transformation in traditional cultural and socio-economic structures. Sardinia also experienced, like never before in its history, a radical cultural and economic change. In particular, the traditional clay construction form was affected, being supplanted by industrially-produced building materials such as concrete. This resulted in a rapid growth in the construction industry and urban expansion catalysed by speculation that caused lasting damage to the appearance of many Sardinian villages. Against this background, the current rediscovery of natural materials and traditional building techniques represents a sustainable alternative to the previous, partly misguided, development of architecture and town planning. This thesis focuses on the hinterland of Cagliari, an area in which both are present: the old townscapes made from clay, an expression of the architectural heritage of Sardinia, and - in contrast to this - the contemporary desolate and oppressive construction style. The aim of the thesis is to examine the possibilities for the use of traditional clay building techniques (in Sardinian: “ladiri”) in Sardinia in the language of contemporary architecture. Understanding the urban and historical issues that are closely connected to the loss of the clay construction technique is the core of the present work. This served as the basis for investigating how the reintroduction of clay as a building material can reveal new prospects for Cagliari's hinterland. The possibility of reintroducing the clay construction technique in Sardinia is investigated in this thesis on three levels: law, city-planning and the economy
