Key-Related Procedures in Mozart's Works with Particular Reference to his Instrumental Music

Als zentrales Thema der Dissertation wird die These aufgestellt, dass in Mozarts Werken eine systematische Korrelation zwischen Tonartenwahl und satztechnischer Gestaltung besteht. Die These wird mithilfe von musikalischen und statistischen Analysen – vor allem in Bezug auf Mozarts Instrumentalwerk – untermauert. Da die mutmaßliche Korrelation zwischen Tonartenwahl und satztechnischer Gestaltung notwendigerweise auf Eigenschaften der Mozartschen Schaffensweise zurückgeht, liegt es nahe, neben der zentralen These auch schaffenspsychologische und -chronologische Aspekte mit einzubeziehen. Diese Aspekte lassen sich keiner statistischen Auswertung unterziehen, dienen vielmehr einem generellen Versuch, sich der Rolle der Tonartenwahl in Mozarts Komponieren und Musikdenken anzunähern. Die hochrelevante Frage nach einer möglichen Verankerung von Mozarts tonartbezogenem Denken in einem breiteren Kontext der zeitgenössischen Kompositionspraxis wird aufgeworfen, kann im Rahmen der Dissertation jedoch nur kursorisch behandelt werden. Im Mittelpunkt der Arbeit steht eine eingehende Untersuchung von Phänomenen aus drei unterschiedlichen satztechnischen Gebieten. Die Gegenstände der Untersuchung sind: 1. Rhetorisch-gestische Eröffnungstopoi in Mozarts Werken mit Orchester / größeren Ensembles. 2. Wendungen zur Moll-Varianttonart in Mozarts instrumentalen Sonaten-Allegro-Sätzen. 3. Erscheinungsformen einer sechstönigen Motivstruktur in Mozarts Gesamtwerk. Eine eingehende statistische Auswertung der Ergebnisse aus den drei Untersuchungsgebieten bestätigt die aufgestellte These insofern, als sich die Korrelation zwischen Tonartenwahl und satztechnischer Gestaltung als ein systematisches Prinzip der Mozartschen Schaffensweise erweist. In einem zweiten Schritt wird anhand einer Analyse von wiederkehrenden Strukturmerkmalen in Mozarts schnellen Sonatenhauptsätzen in C-Dur aufgezeigt, dass tonartgebundene Gestaltungsweisen einen bedeutenden quantitativen sowie qualitativen Stellenwert in seinem Schaffen innehaben. Zum einen treten solche tonartbezogenen Elemente (oder „Tonartenidiome“, wie sie in der Arbeit bezeichnet werden) in einem beträchtlichen Anteil von Mozarts Werken in Erscheinung, zum anderen zeigt das Phänomen eine generelle Intensivierungstendenz durch sein Schaffen hindurch. Zudem gewähren Mozarts Tonartenidiome einen aufschlussreichen und neuartigen Einblick in einige chronologische, ästhetische und semantische Aspekte seines Schaffens.This dissertation examines the thesis that Mozart’s choice of key played a substantial role in determining structural aspects of his music. Musical and statistical analyses of various phenomena in Mozart’s oeuvre – particularly in his instrumental works – are used in order to substantiate the research hypothesis. In order to account for the correlation between Mozart’s choice of key and structural features of his music, some chronological and psychological aspects of his creative process must be taken into consideration. While such aspects may not be subjected to rigorous statistical analysis, they do offer a rewarding insight into the presumable role that the choice of key played in Mozart’s musical thinking. Possible links between key-relatedness in Mozart’s music and a broader context of contemporary compositional practices are highly relevant to an appropriate evaluation of the phenomenon in question; however, such issues go beyond the scope of the dissertation and are only cursorily touched upon. The main part of the dissertation deals with phenomena from three fields of investigation: 1. Rhetoric-gestural opening topoi in Mozart’s works for orchestra/larger ensembles, 2. Minorization instances in Mozart’s instrumental pieces of the sonata-allegro type, 3. Occurrences of a six note motif in Mozart’s entire oeuvre. The rigorous statistical evaluation of these three fields of investigation corroborates the main hypothesis, in that it proves key-relatedness to be not merely anecdotal, but rather indicative of a systematic pattern in Mozart’s creative process. Proceeding from this assumption, a further investigation of recurrent features in Mozart’s sonata-form movements in C major is carried out, suggesting that key-relatedness played a significant quantitative as well as qualitative role in his compositional process. On the one hand, key-related elements (referred to as “key-related idioms”) seem to permeate considerable portions of Mozart’s works; on the other hand, key-relatedness in Mozart’s music proves to intensify with time. Additionally, by tracking the behavior of “key-related idioms”, one gains a novel insight into some intriguing chronological, aesthetical and semantic aspects of Mozart’s creative process
