We present a proof-of-principle demonstration of a low-footprint optical interconnect on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) chip. The optical link consists of a heterogeneously integrated, InP-based microdisk laser (MDL) and microdetector, coupled to a common SOI wire waveguide.
