This article intends to show that, through his first important concept, "il y a" (there is), the thought of Levinas comprises an historical and political dimension which is at the root of his critique of phenomenology. The first part of the article interrogates the historical and political significance of the concept il y a. The second shows that it is this concept thus understood which appears implicity in the young Levinas' reading of Husserl and which motivates his critique. It follows from this analysis that from his early texts, the thought of Levinas is orientated under the impact of history towards a double conflictual determination of the subject which will influence his subsequent philosophical works.
