The theory of the four causes is one of the fundamental doctrines is Aristotle's Physics and Metaphysics. Aristotle elaborated it from an analysis of the opinions of earlier philosophers and also from ordinary language relating to the explanation of things. This Aristotelian theory dominated the latter centuries of the Middle Ages and was then subjected to the most strenuous criticism by modern philosophers such as Bacon, Descartes and Spinoza, who especially attacked the concept of final causality. Hume went even further by attacking the very concept of causality.
