The paper reviews, with 30 refs., carbothermal processing of silicon carbide from silica and carbon and discusses the reaction mechanisms proposed in literature. To elucidate questions about this mechanism diffusion couple expts. are described of Si against C and SiO2 against C at 1350 DegC. From these expts. it is concluded that at low temp. gas-solid reactions are of major importance for the carbothermal process, while solid-solid interactions give only a small contribution.
