THE USE OF SCANNING STRATEGY IN TEACHING READING (A Descriptive Research of the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Islam Jepara in the Academic Year of 2016/2017)

The objective of this study was to know how to use scanning strategy in teaching reading. The research was conducted on eleventh grade students of SMA Islam Jepara. The total of the students was 28. The researcher used descriptive research during the research. In collecting the data, the researcher used interview, classroom observation, and questionnaire. The researcher did classroom observation for three meetings. Based on the description of the result of the implementation of the observation which had been conducted to improve the students reading ability. It could be seen that the implementation of teaching reading by using scanning strategy improved students’ reading ability effectively. The students would get more knowledge, and understand the meaning. They also would get new information quickly from reading used scanning strategy. The students could analyzed sense of the text and students also answered teacher quetions quickly. The researcher found a good atmosphere in the class. In the interview and questionaire, most students agreed that scanning strategy could enrich students’ reading ability. The teacher chose scanning strategy for variations in teaching learning process in the classroom. The students did not feel bored in the learning process. When the teacher taught by using scanning strategy, the students felt enjoy and happy in the learning process. By using scanning strategy in teaching reading, students could easily understand the meaning of the text whitout read all the text. Based on the results, there were few students who had low score from the average. The average of student score in the first result was 75.5. From the second test result, the average score of students was 70. The third test result, the average student score was 80. The score of the first meeting showed that the students enthusiastic to follow the teacher explanation but they did not understand more to used the scanning strategy, so students got standart score in the average. The score of the second meeting, showed that the students were more difficult to understand the text because the students less vocabulary and did not know the meaning of the text, so students got low score than the first meeting. While the third meeting, the students got high score than first meeting and second meeting, because the students understand the content of the text and students already understand well how to used scanning strategy in this task. It was suggested that scanning strategy in teaching reading could be recommended for the English teachers. In the teaching learning process, when the teacher used scanning strategy, the students would be enthusiastic and enjoy during teaching learning process
