Att skapa musik med inspiration från ett filmmanus

In this thesis I have explored ways to compose music with the movie 500 Days of Summer as inspiration. The purpose of the project has been to investigate different methods of being creative with a concept as a starting point and how to express emotions through music, and through this, develop my abilities to play bass, and to play bass and sing at the same time.To do this, I used the following questions: How do I create from a concept and what methods work best for me? What ways to express emotions and themes through music, based on an existing piece of work, works best for me? In what ways can I develop my abilities as a bass player in this process? In what ways can I develop my abilities to play bass and sing at the same time in this process?My methods have sourced from analyzing the movie in depth, documenting details, and using improvisation, amongst others. I have documented the writing process of the songs from idea to finished product, through stages of arranging and different ways of approaching song writing with the bass guitar and voice as my main instruments and tools. The project ended in a concept concert with seven songs all tied together with the story of the movie.It became distinct to me that my methods and making a clear plan at an early stage for the final concert helped me stay inspired and created flow and a coherent collection of music.The project has also pushed me to be creative with my instrument, developed my abilities as a bass player, singer and composer and have helped me find playfulness in making music.
