The aristotelian definition of the soul as a substantial form or first actuality of the living being implies, within the framework of hylomorphism, that its ontological counterpart is prime matter, whose radical potentiality allows it to be the support of the first actuality. It is this relationship of first actuality to a radical potency that assures the ontological unity of the compositum, but it also implies that all the substantial determinations of the compositum come from its formal principle : the soul. This conception was not kept in its purity by Aristotle's commentators.
