The fame of hegelian philosophy arises from the fact that it yields to a demand for absoluteness, inherent to metaphysical thought, while rejecting ontological transcendance, as abhorrent to modern positive mind. There is no being beyond space and time, nothing absolute, if not the realizations of mind in experience and history. These progressive realizations are described in the Phenomenology of Mind; but if we are to recognise them as manifestations of the absolute, a sort of reflection is needed by which experience and history are seen as the effects of rational necessity, according with the requirements of pure thought, so as to grant the full rationality of being. The Phenomenology of Mind claims to be founded in a sort of Logic, which is neither reduced to formal reasoning, nor amounts to a critical examination of cognitive truth, testing conformity between thought and its object, but which aims at a systematic construction, whereby the mind produces its own object, while becoming aware of the requirements of pure reason. It is from Spinoza that Hegel borrowed the view of philosophy as systematic thought and of logic as exertion of the «native power of understanding»; but he is obstinate in reproaching Spinoza for having not shown the way by which thought necessarily arises from the conception of abstract being or substance to self-consciousness, that is to the notion of being as subject or mind. The overcoming of eleatism, however, is obtained, according to Hegel, in Platonic dialectics, where the opposition between being and not-being is bridged by means of relations, such as same and other; but what Hegel has failed to remark, is that the dialectic of summa genera, by which objects are determined before the understanding, is subordinated by Plato to an ontological construction which refers to an absolute claim, which requires an unconditioned principle, implied with the activity of transcendant Intellect. In the neoplatonic synthesis, the Intellect or Mind is not the Absolute, the prime hypostasis ; but it is only by conversion towards the absolute One, or the First principle, that Intellect instates itself and the intelligibles objects; Nature or sensible world is derived from it, and is a third hypostasis. On the contrary, in the hegelian Encyclopaedia, Nature is the outwardness of the Idea, the exterior reflection of abstract logos, and it is only while the Idea comes back to itself, that Mind progressivly arises, whereas Nature is overcomed. Hegelianism appears then as an inversion of neoplatonism, which might be summed up in these words: abstract being, that is the most general object of thought, may be equated with the absolute as present in some way to our mind, but not recognised as such; it is only when we become aware of it that it comes itself to real being, as a subject conscious of himself, as God or the absolute Mind. This aberrant proposition (ungereimter Satz, as Kant would say) is the conclusion of a sort of dialectic which renounces the primordial conversion, pointing yet towards absolute, but walking topsy turvy. intelligibles objects; Nature or sensible world is derived from it, and is a third hypostasis. Rien ne saurait être au delà de l'espace et du temps, et il n'est d'autre absolu que les réalisations de l'esprit dans l'expérience et dans l'histoire. La description de telles réalisations fait l'objet de la Phénoménologie de l'Esprit; mais pour reconnaître dans ce progrès historique la manifestation de l'absolu, il faut une réflexion capable de saisir dans l'expérience et dans l'histoire l'effet d'une nécessité rationnelle, la réalisation d'une exigence pure de la raison, d'où résulte la rationalité du réel. La Phénoménologie de l'Esprit requiert donc comme fondement une Logique, qui ne se réduit pas à une théorie du raisonnement formel, qui ne consiste pas non plus dans une critique de la connaissance, examinant les conditions de l'accord entre la pensée et son objet, mais qui s'exerce dans une construction systématique, par laquelle l'esprit produit lui-même son objet à mesure qu'il prend conscience de lui-même, des exigences de la raison. C'est de Spinoza que Hegel a reçu cette conception de la philosophie comme système, de la logique comme expérience de la «puissance native de l'entendement»; mais il reproche obstinément à Spinoza de n'avoir pas su montrer comment de la considération de l'être abstrait ou substance la pensée s'élève nécessairement à la conscience de soi, à la notion de l'être comme sujet ou esprit. Ce dépassement de l'éléatisme s'accomplit cependant, estime Hegel, dans la dialectique platonicienne, où l'opposition de Yêtre et du non-être est surmontée au moyen des relations du même et de Vautre; ce qui échappe toutefois à Hegel, c'est que cette dialectique des genres suprêmes, par où se déterminent les objets de l'entendement, est subordonnée dans le platonisme à une construction ontologique, qui se réfère à une exigence absolue, qui requiert un principe inconditionné, l'activité d'un Intellect transcendant. Dans la synthèse néoplatonicienne, l'esprit ou l'Intellect n'est pas l'absolu, la première hypostase; mais c'est par sa conversion vers l'Un ou Premier principe qu'il se constitue en même temps que l'Univers intelligible ; et la Nature ou le monde sensible est dérivée de lui, comme troisième hypostase.
