Liberté et espérance chez Kant

In the Critique of Pure Reason, the Critique of Practical Reason and Religion, practical freedom and hope appear as complementary. They are distinguished as the exercise of a power proper to man and the awaiting of divine aid. They share the function of the cosmological idea of freedom, radical spontaneity, cause of phenomena and of their natural connection; they confer on it an objective reality in the practical order. But the notion of freedom has not, strictly speaking, the same meaning in these three works, as one can best notice by observing the correlative meaning of hope. In the Critique of Pure Reason freedom is free will, spontaneity, cause of actions; hope concerns happiness, the obtaining of which depends on the free will of others and on God, author of nature. In the Critique of Practical Reason freedom is the property of a legislative will; hope bears not only on happiness, but also on moral perfection. In Religion freedom is again free will, but separated from all law and originally evil ; hope also concerns happiness, but above all the union of free wills in a moral kingdom of God. The distinction between phenomena and noumena in Kant is the fundamental principle of intelligibility as much from the speculative point of view as from the practical point of view and from the religious point of view; it is faithfulness to this principle which invites one to understand Religion as Kant's most coherent statement on the relationship between freedom and hope.Dans la Critique de la raison pure, la Critique de la raison pratique et La religion, liberté pratique et espérance apparaissent comme complémentaires. Elles se distinguent comme l'exercice d'un pouvoir propre à l'homme et l'attente d'une aide divine. Elles se partagent la fonction de l'idée cosmologique de liberté, spontanéité radicale, cause des phénomènes et de leur enchaînement naturel ; elles lui confèrent une réalité objective d'ordre pratique. Mais la notion de liberté n'a pas, dans ces trois œuvres, rigoureusement la même signification, comme on l'aperçoit au mieux en observant la signification corrélative de l'espérance. Dans la Critique de la raison pure, la liberté est le libre arbitre, spontanéité, cause des actions; l'espérance concerne le bonheur, dont l'obtention dépend du libre arbitre des autres et de Dieu, auteur de la nature. Dans la Critique de la raison pratique, la liberté est la propriété d'une volonté législative; l'espérance porte non seulement sur le bonheur, mais aussi sur la perfection morale. Dans La religion, la liberté est à nouveau le libre arbitre, mais dégagé de toute loi et originellement mauvais; l'espérance concerne encore le bonheur, mais avant tout l'union des volontés libres en un royaume moral de Dieu. La distinction entre phénomènes et noumènes est chez Kant le principe d'intelligibilité fondamental tant au point de vue spéculatif qu'au point de vue pratique et au point de vue religieux; c'est la fidélité à ce principe qui invite à comprendre La religion comme l'expression la plus cohérente de Kant sur les rapports de la liberté et de l'espérance.Van Riet Georges.
