In the Critique of Pure Reason, the Critique of Practical Reason and Religion, practical freedom and hope appear as complementary. They are distinguished as the exercise of a power proper to man and the awaiting of divine aid. They share the function of the cosmological idea of freedom, radical spontaneity, cause of phenomena and of their natural connection; they confer on it an objective reality in the practical order. But the notion of freedom has not, strictly speaking, the same meaning in these three works, as one can best notice by observing the correlative meaning of hope.
