During the second Fernandine Monarchy (1823-1833), directors of the legitimate stage fought a fierce battle against opera imprésarios who had invaded the capital in the 1820s and who had succeeded in attracting the public to their musical spectacles. Ironically, the imprésarios of the stage were often the very individuáis who contracted Italian singers to perform in Madrid (Grimaldi, for example). The precarious finances of the theater demanded inventive solutions if the theaters were to remain alive, and opera became one of the most popular diversions of the period.
