The difficulty of taking household production into account when measuring inequality and poverty: Conceptual and empirical problems Household production has a far from negligible impact on living standards. In a country like France, more hours are devoted to home work than to an outside job. A characteristic of all the countries undergoing an economic transition, including Russia, is that a major portion of national wealth is left unmeasured: the underground economy, undeclared jobs and, too, the perfectly legal activities of household production.
