Lacan's formula which holds that "the unconscious is structured like a language" has today become almost a commonplace of culture. It travels from one tongue to the next until its meaning has become worn out. The question is raised in this article as to its origin and significance. What are the linguistic sources of Lacan and what use — or abuse — did he make of them? "The authority of the letter in the unconscious or reason since Freud" operates, in our view, an epistemological divide in Lacan's theorisation.
