Demarcation of local territorial units, borders and the nation: Ideas, issues and practices related to decentralization in Macedonia This article aims to examine the political debates and social mobilization that occured during the 2004 reform of municipal boundaries in Macedonia. Decentralization is a full part of the Ohrid Agreement, a compromise negotiated between the Macedonian majority and the Albanian minority under the auspices of the international community following the armed conflict in 2001. In the summer of 2004, opposition from the Slav majority to the demarcation of municipalities reached unexpected proportions. How to explain the scale of this social protest?
