The linguistic situation in Ukraine is peculiar: the official language (Ukrainian) is not the language now used by the majority of the population, who speak Russian. The distribution of Russian and Ukrainian is a heritage from the far past and from the linguistic and ethnic "Russification" of Ukraine during the Soviet era. It has led to linguistic polarization along the still current East/West axis. The young Ukrainian state has set the objective of forming a Ukrainian nation where language will become a major symbol given the absence of other signs typical of a nation.
