Interviews with Romanian Greek Catholics underlie this focus on their denomination during the Communist era. After 1948, Communist government in Romania integrated the Greek Catholic Church into the official Romanian Orthodox Church. However, some believers continued secretly worshiping as Greek Catholics. Unlike some Roman Catholic establishments, the Romanian Greek Catholic Church was not a place of protest against Communist power, even though individual acts of opposition existed. Between 1948 and 1989, the Greek Catholic Church lacked institutional support from within Romania or from the West.
