On the basis of several case studies of Moldovan companies during the period of systemic change, an analysis is made both of the adjustments major firms (state- owned or now being privatized) made to the demand for labour, and of the developments of small businesses. The actions of big firms are compared with those of other Eastern European countries, especially Russia. Despite a healthier macroeconomic environment (low inflation, a stable exchange rate), these firms are "passively" reacting to changes in the rules of the economic game, in particular as regard jobs.
