L'importance du travail forcé dans l'Union soviétique de Staline

The extent of forced labor in Stalin's Soviet Union. Recent revelations from the archives of the former Soviet Union have provided much detailed data on the population of the GULAG forced labour system. These data add significant information to the decades of academic debate on the question of the extent of the Soviet forced labour system, but detailed assessment shows that they do not yet constitute the final word. The archival revelations also sub-divide the total population according to gender, social and ethnic background, and judicial criteria. The contribution of the GULAG workforce to the national economy of the USSR during World War Two is considered in the light of newly available information, in order to gain an understanding of the place of the well-organised camp system in the chaos of wartime.Des révélations récentes, provenant des archives de Fex-U.R.S.S., ont fourni des statistiques détaillées sur la population du système de travail forcé, c'est-à-dire du Goulag. Ces informations, jusqu'ici inédites, contribuent à éclairer le débat, entamé depuis des décennies, sur l'ampleur du système soviétique de travail forcé. Mais lorsqu'on les scrute de près, il s'avère qu'elles ne mettent pas le point final à la controverse. Les nouvelles statistiques disponibles ventilent en outre la population selon le sexe, l'origine sociale et ethnique et selon des critères judiciaires. L'apport de la force de travail du Goulag à l'économie nationale de l'U.R.S.S. durant la seconde guerre mondiale est analysé à la lumière des informations nouvellement publiées. On peut ainsi mieux comprendre la place tenue par le système bien organisé des camps dans un pays où la guerre fait régner le chaos.Bacon Edwin.
