Les protestants en Russie

The protestants in Russia. Having first situated protestantism in the present context of " religious revival " in Russia, and attempted to assess its relative importance, the author looks at the relations between various protestant denominations as well as the relationships which the protestantism enjoys with the orthodox Church, the State and the protestant churches abroad. Thus it appears that the largest denomination in Russia, that of the evangelical- baptists (under which heading the Russians tend to group all protestants) is facing serious opposition from disruptive forces in its efforts to achieve unity and ecumenism. The protestant mainstream has seen a deterioration in its relations with orthodoxy since 1988, controversy on theological and sociological questions, on ideas of Russianness and patriotism. As for relations with the State, these are improving, particularly as a result of the law of 1 990 on the freedom of worship, though its application gives some grounds for anxiety. At all events, the improvement in co-operation between Western and Russian protestant communions has enabled the latter to expand its activities. The author, in conclusion, underlines the fact that although a certain degree of hostility to the protestants still persists, there exists in Russia to-day, in the religious context, a degree of general tolerance which allows adherents of each denomination free expression of conscience.Après avoir replacé le protestantisme dans le contexte actuel de " renouveau religieux " en Russie et tenté d'en apprécier le poids relatif, l'auteur examine les relations entre les diverses dénominations protestantes ainsi que celles entretenues avec l'orthodoxie, l'État et le protestantisme à l'étranger. Il apparaît ainsi que la dénomination la plus nombreuse en Russie, celle des chrétiens evangéliques-baptistes (auxquels les Russes ont tendance à assimiler tous les protestants) rencontre de sérieuses oppositions, dans son aspiration à l'union et à l'œcuménisme, de la part de forces centrifuges. L'ensemble du courant protestant lui- même voit ses relations avec l'orthodoxie se dégrader depuis 1988, la polémique concernant les questions théologiques et sociologiques ainsi que les notions de russité et de patriotisme. Les relations avec l'État, quant à elles, s'améliorent, sous l'influence notamment de la loi de 1990 sur la liberté des cultes, mais son application n'est pas sans susciter certaines inquiétudes. Enfin, l'élargissement de la coopération entre mouvements protestants en Occident et en Russie a permis aux seconds de développer leurs activités. L'auteur conclut son étude en soulignant que, même si une certaine hostilité à l'égard des protestants ne faiblit pas, la Russie connaît aujourd'hui, au plan religieux, une situation de tolérance générale qui permet à chaque confession de s'exprimer librement.Podberezskij Igor V., De Peretti André.
