The Times of Nigeria (1914-1918) by James Bright Davies: Dialogues between the press, negrophobia and the construction of nationalism

O conto A Historiadora Obstinada, de Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche (2017), retratou a trajetória de uma família igbo que sofreu com as influências do colonialismo britânico na Nigéria, no início do século XX, assim como as transformações que ocorreram no cotidiano da região. A personagem Afamefuma, desacreditada com a visão eurocêntrica aprendida na escola, a qual desqualificava os saberes de sua avó, segue um caminho profissional como historiadora para transcender o legado das historiografias eurocêntricas da biblioteca colonial. Nesse sentido, com a inspiração desse conto, mas usando outras esferas, elaboramos um estudo crítico sobre o jornal The Times of Nigeria, analisando as dinâmicas presentes na cultura material impressa durante os anos de 1914-1918, por meio dos seus anúncios e matérias. O editor do jornal, James Bright Davies (Serra Leoa/igbo), nos auxiliou em cotejar a imprensa, ocupando junto com seu periódico, um espaço de “meio-termo”. Esse conceito foi emprestado do nigeriano-igbo Chinua Achebe (1930-2013), ao interpretar a agência da elite intelectual africana no espaço urbano, numa perspectiva crítica ao projeto imperialista. Para realizar essa obra, abrimos os bastidores do funcionamento da Oficina da Historiadora Obstinada, revelando as questões que sustentaram o trabalho de historiografar a fonte jornalística, assim como as relações entre a pesquisa e as filiações da pesquisadora. Nessa dissertação, mobilizamos materiais inéditos para os Estudos Africanos no Brasil, mergulhando nas contribuições da historiografia nigeriana e internacional, trazendo traduções comentadas das elaborações de Toyin Falola, Saheed Aderinto, Ifedayo Daramola, Jonh Enemugwen e do pioneiro dos estudos sobre a imprensa nigeriana - Frederick Isaac Akporuaro Omu. As temáticas especialmente trabalhadas nessa investigação, estiveram conectadas com as repercussões da construção do Protetorado da Nigéria, unificado em 1914, desenhando as fronteiras do seu estado moderno. Dessa maneira, os debates centrais, foram sobre a trajetória do jornalista James Bright Davies, a Primeira Guerra Mundial, a negrophobia em Lagos e a construção do nacionalismo por meio da imprensa.The tale The Headstrong Historian, by Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche (2017), depicted the trajectory of an igbo family that suffered from the influences of British colonialism in Nigeria in the early twentieth century, as well as the transformations that occurred in the daily life of the region. The character Afamefuma, discredited by the eurocentric vision learned at school, which disqualified her grandmother's knowledge, follows a professional path as a historian to transcend the legacy of the eurocentric historiographies of the colonial library. In this regard, with the inspiration of this tale, but using other spheres, this dissertation elaborated a critical study of The Times of Nigeria newspaper, analyzing the dynamics present in the printed material culture during the years 1914-1918, through its advertisements and articles. The newspaper's editor, James Bright Davies (Sierra Leone/igbo), assisted us in collating the press, occupying along with his journal, a "middle ground" space. This concept was borrowed from the nigerian-igbo Chinua Achebe (1930-2013) when interpreting the agency of the african intellectual elite in the urban space, from a critical perspective to the imperialist project. To conduct this investigation, we opened the backstage of the operation of the Atelier of the Headstrong Historian, revealing the issues that underpin the work of historiographing the journalistic source and the relationships among the research and the researcher's affiliations. By evidencing her choices, with the motivation to seek justice in a country with such a strong slavocratic heritage, it is imperative to have an anti-racist stance when researching African History. In this dissertation, new works for African Studies were brought to light, diving into the contributions of both the nigerian and international historiography, providing commented translations of the elaborations by Toyin Falola, Saheed Aderinto, Ifedayo Daramola, John Enemugwen, and the pioneer of studies on the nigerian press - Frederick Isaac Akporuaro Omu. The themes especially worked on in this research were connected to the development of the Protectorate of Nigeria, amalgamated in 1914, drawing the borders of its modern state. Therefore, the central debates were about the path of journalist James Bright Davies, the First World War, negrophobia in Lagos and the construction of nationalism through the press.Não recebi financiament
